Laura Smart: Everyday hero

We're celebrating our volunteers this month and we'd like to introduce you to one of our everyday heroes... Laura Smart! Laura has been a CASA volunteer in DeKalb County since April of 2018. She has overseen 11 CHINCS cases and advocated for a total of 14 kiddos. Laura has two children and two grandchildren, ages 5 and 8. She has a degree in business which she did for years. She was later given the opportunity to shift into a social service career and began working with the senior/disabled population. Laura feels that her career has been beneficial to her work as a CASA volunteer.

“When I first became a CASA, I was working through the regular court system and enjoyed being a voice for the child. I truly believe without a CASA; the child's voice is rarely really heard.”

When Dekalb County started the Family Restoration Court (FRC) program, Laura took on CHINS families who were going through this program. Laura has been a part of this team and has the ability to speak on behalf of the child. Laura currently has three cases that are going through the FRC program and is excited to see one of her families graduate soon.

Laura stated, “I am so thankful for the CASA program and for all the advocates out there, speaking for the child.” Laura, we greatly appreciate all that you do to advocate for kids in DeKalb County!
